Message NEVER had any problems... I spray the cleaning product on the engine, let it sit for a minute or so and hold it about 2-3 feet from the engine... at 2-3ft. you can put your hand in front and it's fine... The key is to go back and forth in a fast motion to not let the water soak one area more than another, I've NEVER had any problems and detailers usually do the same thing, only using hot water. I personally prefer to do it when the engine is "slightly" warm, not after you've been driving around.
sorry about your mis-hap.
(btw, for the flamers... I've cleaned my engine w/ a brush a few times now... I prefer the powerwasher to get all the dirt off crammed areas since I only clean my engine about 1-2 times per year)
